Marine Industry

Emerging Leaders Institute

The time for new tools is now.

Today, we have an opportunity to ensure long-term industry growth, but only if we proactively create and cultivate a robust pipeline of future-ready leaders -- leaders who are equipped and eager to take on the new challenges of the post-2020 workplace with innovation, inclusion, and inspiration.

The old rules don't apply....

Since 2020, the world and our workplaces have changed dramatically. From hybrid to Gen Z to AI, our industries and companies face an entirely new set of challenges in their path to growth.

...and neither do the old tools.

At the same time, countless studies and employee surveys demonstrate that we have failed to equip leaders with the new skills and competencies they need to successfully and confidently lead in this new environment.

We are facing an industry-wide leadership gap.

The Marine industry faces 3 key and urgent leadership challenges that it needs to address in order to secure future growth and innovation for the sector:
01

An Impending Retirement Cliff

Nearly 40% of the US marine industry is expected to retire within the next 10 years. This is significantly higher than most other industries, where the average is 23%. This “retirement cliff” will affect industry leadership most, leaving a potential gap in leadership skills.

02

A Growing Skills Gap

There is a growing gap between the current skillset of the marine sector workforce, and those required to take the industry forward -- particularly around technology, automation, and increasingly complex environmental and policy regulations. Yet, less than 50% of respondents to a recent industry survey reported having access to training and/or learning and development programs at their companies. To bridge this skills gap and meet future demands, the industry must focus on equipping the next generation of leaders with the ability to lead and manage diverse, tech-driven projects in a hybrid environment.

03

Hunger for Career Advancement

Respondents to a 2024 industry survey cited a lack of clear development paths as a major challenge to their advancement. Worse, the gap seems to widen between women and men: 40% of male respondents felt supported in their career advancement, compared to only 23% of women. As the industry seeks to fill the retirement gap (see above) and attract the next generation of talent, it will be crucial to demonstrate and provide development opportunities.

Here's how we close the leadership gap

The P20 Emerging Leaders Institute aims to ensure future growth for the industry and its companies by developing a robust pipeline of transformational leaders.

The Program

The 10-month program is built on 3 core features essential to developing the next generation of talented leaders with the skills and support needed to succeed in the post-2020 world.

Leadership Learning

The program is organized into 10 learning modules, each of which addresses a distinct topic and skillset. Each module includes live virtual learning, interactive activities, practice, coaching, and feedback.

Executive Coaching

No two leaders are exactly the same, so the program provides each participant with the opportunity for more individualized coaching and support during their enrolment.

Based on their needs, participants can choose between group coaching or flexible packs of 1:1 sessions with a curated list of industry-specific, certified coaches.

Community Cohort

Each participant forms part of an 8-12 member cohort of other emerging leaders in their industry. This cohort presents networking and business development opportunities, alongside peer-to-peer support.

Our Story

Meet Founder, Melina Cordero

I launched P20 Workplace in 2021, leaving behind a senior executive role in commercial real estate to address what I recognized as a pressing need to help organizations adapt to the new needs of the post-2020 world and workforce.

Since 2020, nearly everything we knew about how, where, when, and why we work has changed. To build companies and industries ready to thrive far into the future, the old rules don’t apply, and neither do the old tools.

I believe great leadership is at the heart of our industries’ success, and I’m committed to helping organizations cultivate and sustain the skills to lead inclusively, innovatively, and with confidence.

I’m a proudly open book; you can read more about my journey and mission here.

Great leaders go there.
